Description:

Are We Ready as a Dental Profession to Respond to Bioterrorism and other Mass Disasters?

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

Following the events of September 11, 2001 and other recent bioterrorism events in the U.S., the nation took a hard look at how well we were prepared to handle the outcomes of a mass disaster. Progress had been made, but as was evident after Hurricane Katrina, much more is still needed. In 2002 the American Dental Association released a report on the role of the dental profession in responding to future disasters and found that there were considerable resources available, both in personnel and facilities. However, the two areas that were found to be deficient were preparedness/training and better integration into local Disaster Response planning. The first part of the program will address the role of the dental profession in a disaster response and the second half will be a review of dentistry's response to the Hurricane Katrina disaster.
