This course provides an overview of evidence to support an association between periodontal disease and systemic diseases/conditions such coronary heart disease, ischemic stroke, adverse pregnancy outcomes, complications of diabetes, aspiration pneumonia, and other diseases/condition which are underpinned by chronic inflammation. Discussion of the beginning of this body of science, which dates back to Hippocrates, and the evolution of theory regarding periodontal-systemic science provides the background for exploring the current state of this research. Through real life case studies, we are beginning to understand the biologic plausibility of such a relationship. Intervention trials being conducted provide compelling evidence that treating periodontitis will reduce systemic disease. Clearly, a new role for dental and medical professionals in assuring a person's oral health - total health is quickly emerging.
After attending the course, participants should be able to:
Discuss the Evolution of the Etiological Theory Related to Periodontal-Systemic Medicine
Discuss the Biological Plausibility of the Association Between Periodontal Disease andSystemic Diseases Such as Coronary Heart Disease, Ischemic Stroke, Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes, Complications of Diabetes, Aspiration Pneumonia
Discuss New Models of Transdisciplinary Care That Rely on Collaboration Between Medical and Dental Providers in Reducing Risk for Oral and Systemic Diseases/Conditions
Identify Strategies to Increase Awareness of Periodontal-Systemic Medicine Within the Medical Community and Ideas for Building Medical-Dental Collaboration Which Will Benefit Patients in Providing Unprecedented Care in Private Practice Dentistry
