This course will emphasize a number of significant issues including: changes in modern orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning, especially a more thorough clinical examination of soft tissue proportions and adaptations, better classification of orthodontic problems, and application of 3-D imaging techniques to assess facial proportions and treatment outcomes.; new findings in the biology of orthodontic treatment, including daily rhythms in growth, drug effects that can accelerate and inhibit tooth movement, clinical application of new information about the mechanics and control of tooth eruption, and the beginnings of genetic analysis in evaluation of orthodontic patients; new perspectives on the treatment of severe dentofacial problems, especially those related to muscular abnormalities, rheumatoid arthritis, and mandibular asymmetries; an evaluation of changes in orthodontic appliances an the marketing of these devices: self-ligating brackets, esthetic (lingual and clear aligner) appliances, computer-generated custom brackets and simple archwires versus non-prescription brackets and computer-formed custom archwires, and mini-plates versus bone screws as temporary anchorage devices (TADs)
