Description:

Due to the recurrent nature of periodontal disease, the ongoing assessment of the patient's periodontal health status could be considered a big risk. The hygienist shares the responsibility for tracking the risk status of recall patients, and is the one with primary contact with the patient over time. In addition, the responsibility for monitoring the patient's health falls on the hygienist.

Dr. Meador developed three systems of data analysis in his practice. The most useful system for the hygienist, by far, is the Re-Evaluation Procedure. The other two systems can provide a valid learning experience for those interested in a very fast and efficient approach to diagnosis and treatment planning for periodontal disease:
the re-evaluation procedure was developed for the purpose of monitoring the patient's health status over time. Because of the recurrent nature of periodontal disease, every patient was evaluated every two or three years. The decision-making flow chart and the perio risk profile will also be described.

OBJECTIVES

After the course, each participant should understand:

  • Indicators - signify what has happened by evidence of damage (probing depths, mobility patterns, and bone loss on x-rays).
  • Predictors - signify what probably will happen in the future without any changes in behavior (plaque score, bleeding score, regularity of the long term maintenance program).
  • Applying these parameters through the dynamics of patient co-discovery allows the patient's risk profile to be updated periodically and described in very simple terms.
  • Reviews for A Short-Cut to Assessing Periodontal Risk
