Description:

This workshop will present materials on how to manage the pediatric dental patient with special needs. In particular, information will be provided about children with developmental disabilities, learning disabilities, autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), eating disorders. Each disorder will be discussed - how the disorder is diagnosed, which symptoms you may see in your pediatric patient, how the disorder affects the child's response to dental treatment, and which specific behavior management strategies may be used for treatment.

At the completion of this lecture, the participant will be able to: Understand the cognitive and social characteristics of different childhood disorders and the communication patterns most useful when treating children with these disorders. Identify behavior you may see in children during a dental office visit that may indicate certain types of childhood disorders. Identify ways to respond to child patients with specific special needs. Understand how parent/guardian collaboration can benefit the child and lead to optimal treatment.
