Description:

Caries Risk Assessment and Management, Including Non-Surgical and Surgical Treatments

More and more, dentists are faced with patients who have significant dental caries. These patients can be very challenging to treat, but there are ways to stop the caries process, restore lost tooth structure and help patients take control of their oral health. Traditional approaches need to be expanded to include the systematic management of caries risk with an emphasis on prevention. However, it's no longer just about fluoride and oral hygiene instruction. There are new ways to actively (and effectively) manage caries risk. This program will discuss epidemiology of caries, current evidence on the caries disease process, and new ways to diagnose, prevent and treat caries. It will also present a common-sense approach to caries risk assessment and management that can be implemented in practice.

Assuring Success with Direct Esthetic Restorations

Direct resin restorations are a mainstay of most general dental practices - used for everything from minimal intervention dentistry to cores. Most of the time, results are excellent, but what about when they are less than ideal? The mind-boggling array of materials and bonding systems currently available can add to the confusion. Understanding the categories, composition and properties of these materials and specifically how they work, can help the practitioner make choices that will lead to long-term success. Tips for materials selection, handling, finishing and maintenance of esthetic restorations will be provided.

At the completion of the course participants will be able to:

  • Describe the rationale for caries risk assessment in dental practice.
  • Describe risk factors and their relative importance in determining caries risk.
  • Develop strategies for managing caries risk.
  • Explain factors related to caries diagnosis and how diagnosis affects treatment of caries.
  • Describe non-surgical treatment of caries and the role of minimal intervention dentistry.
  • Work with the dental team and patient to develop a caries risk management plan.
  • Describe the types of direct esthetic materials and how their composition affects their performance.
  • Describe the types of adhesive systems and the benefits and shortcomings of each system.
  • Describe strategies for optimal finishing and maintenance of direct esthetic restorations.
