Description:
This is an intensive 18-hour course in oral sedative techniques enhanced by, video cases, scenario discussion and hands-on airway and monitoring laboratory exercises. Upon successful completion of this course the attendee may be eligible to apply for a sedation permit in their state depending on that state's rules and regulations.
At the conclusion of the course, the participant should be able to:
- Describe adult and pediatric anatomy and physiology of the respiratory, cardiovascular and central nervous systems as they relate to sedation
- Describe the pharmacological effects of sedative drugs
- Describe the methods of obtaining a medical history and conduct a focused physical examination
- Use this information clinically to determine physical status
- Discuss considerations for the dental office using oral sedation including, staff responsibilities, training and equipment
- Choose the most appropriate technique for the patient, dentist and procedure
- Use appropriate physiological monitoring
- List and discuss advantages and disadvantages of oral sedation
- List and discuss advantages and disadvantages of inhalation sedation
- Discuss the prevention, recognition and management of medical and sedative emergencies
- List and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of combined techniques utilizing nitrous oxide-oxygen and oral sedatives
- Describe protocols for the management of emergencies in the dental office; list and discuss the contents of emergency kits
- Understand the medico-legal considerations in sedative care
