Description:

Part I - Periodontal maintenance is the most important part of long-term periodontal success.Ultrasonics are an effective and essential tool in the treatment of periodontal disease in all phases of nonsurgical periodontal therapy. Topics to becovered in this course include treatment sequencing, the blended approach of hand and ultrasonic instrumentation, and the implementation of ultrasonics during periodontal debridement and periodontal maintenance. Evidence-based recall frequency, re-evaluation, and retreatment will be discussed.A historical perspective on the rationale and use of ultrasonics as well as current trends in insert and machine design will also be covered.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to:

  • Select ultrasonic equipment based on patient and practice needs.

  • Integrate ultrasonics into the treatment of all periodontal case types.

  • Determine the need for retreatment after nonsurgical periodontal therapy.

  • Utilize a blended approach of hand and ultrasonic instrumentation to maximize
    desired treatment results.

  • Determine appropriate recall frequency based on empirical and scientific data.

Part II - Limited Attendance

This hands-on workshop offers participants the opportunity to apply the techniques and skills discussed in the morning session. Attendees will be able to experience a variety of ultrasonic inserts while working on typodonts under supervision. The goals of this session are to enable the clinician to identify modifying factors related to nonsurgical periodontal instrumentation and improve ultrasonic instrumentation skills to facilitate thorough periodontal debridement and enhance treatment outcomes. Emphasis will be on appropriate tip selection, adaptation techniques, use of specialized inserts, and accessing areas of difficulty.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to:

  • List criteria for the appropriate selection of ultrasonic inserts, both standard and modified.

  • Demonstrate the correct technique for utilization of the ultrasonic scaler to include
insert and power selection, lavage flow, grasp, fulcrum, tip adaptation, and stroke

  • Identify various modifying factors which influence and/or change instrumentation protocols such as root anatomy, furcations and oral conditions.

  • Access areas of difficulty with greater ease and efficiency.
