Description:

Oral surgery, particularly exodontia, doesn't need to be viewed as unpredictable and stressful with numerous potential complications unless you don't have the requisite expertise and instruments to effectively do the job. Some teeth can become surprisingly difficult to extract, especially in older people. This course provides much of the same information that an oral surgery resident would receive from mentors to enable you to be far more successful and confident at removing teeth. With that basis and foundation, it is not too far a stretch to other minor oral surgery procedures such as impacted third molars, tori removal, apicos, and sinus closure.

Course Objectives

This two-day course will provide the surgery-oriented general practitioner with the knowledge to diagnose, treatment plan, and treat extraction and other types of surgery cases. It will also identify the kinds of patients that should be referred to specialists. It will enable the dentist who starts a case to take it to completion through algorithmic progressions of various techniques and steps - many not taught in dental school. It will lessen the fear-factor of common complications through providing basic knowledge about them.

Participant Objectives

At the completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Identify surgery cases that they can successfully undertake

  • Perform surgery cases according to accepted "standards of care"

  • Recognize patients who should be referred to specialists

  • Avoid common drug reactions and interactions

  • Differentiate between adequate and inadequate radiographs

  • Identify key anatomic entities that impact on dentoalveolar surgery

  • Prevent or manage maxillary sinus problems

  • Avoid tuberosity fractures

  • Greatly minimize the possibility of injury to the lingual and inferioralveolar nerves

  • Select bone grafting materials that are most appropriate to future treatment of a given area

  • Describe the use of surgery instruments that are most effective at accomplishing the procedure at hand

  • Remove moderately impacted third molar teeth

  • Discuss the management of various health conditions, such as patients on anticoagulants, bisphosphonates, and those with diabetes
