Course Title: Adult Orthodontics I: Managing Orthodontic Treatment for Patients with Periodontal Problems Instructor: VINCE KOKICH, D.D.S., M.S.D. Course Date: March 17 – 18, 2011 Reasons to join this course: Since most orthodontists now treat between 20 and 40% adult patients, and generally do not keep up on recent advances in periodontal therapy, it is important to review the current philosophy regarding the management of the periodontal patient. This is especially true for the adult patient who will require single-tooth implants or implant anchorage to facilitate orthodontic treatment. In these cases, special steps, including diagnostic wax-ups, are often necessary to determine the appropriate treatment plan. Dr. Kokich will clearly explain why the treatment of adult patients brings an extended responsibility to you as the orthodontist. Most orthodontic patients have an "intact" dentition and a healthy periodontium. As a result, orthodontists are often complacent and overlook the importance of a periodontal examination. However, if this complacent attitude is used in treating adult orthodontic patients, the periodontal health could be compromised. Hard tissue defects can be improved substantially during orthodontic treatment, if the clinician recognizes the problem and institutes the appropriate tooth movement. Pre-existing soft tissue defects can compromise the appearance of the teeth and must be treated at the correct time and in the proper manner. The benefit for you: In this course, you will learn how to communicate in the interdisciplinary team with the periodontist and restorative dentist, and how to improve substantially the periodontal situation of adult patients. Jul 22, 2011 So much learned and so much to implement into my implant practice on Monday. Understanding biology behind implant dentistry helped me understand the reason for performing procedures. Not until now do I completely feel that I have a firm grasp on the science...
