The object of this course is to reacquaint the students with basic straight wire concepts and to use these as building blocks for incorporation of new techniques into their practices. Review of current literature is stressed showing the student how the results of basic and clinical research are applicable to "everyday: situations. The biological and biomechanical bases of orthodontics treatment are correlated to actual clinical situations. Advanced wire bending will be taught so that each finished case can be "characterized" forth the individual patient. Typodonts will be used for orientation of placing various loop, bends and auxiliary power units. Modern metallurgical advances, such as nickel-titanium will be introduced. Dentofacial orthopedic devices that can be incorporated into the straight wire arch will be discussed.
