SESSION I: Antibiotic Prescribing: No More Magic Bullets!
With the emergence of "super bugs" and widespread antibiotic resistance in the community setting, clinicians are faced with difficult choices when treating head and neck infections or when prescribing prophylactic antibiotics. We will examine the rise of the "super bugs" and discuss their impact on dental practice. Antibiotic cost-effectiveness against oral pathogens will be listed and drug selection criteria will be outlined. We will also review the new American Heart Association premed guidelines and focus on the controversial aspects of their clinical use. Finally, we will discuss the rationale for antibiotic premedication decisions for patient implants and devices NOT covered by current published guidelines. Practical and detailed handouts will be provided to ensure that lecture material can be applied to clinical practice.
SESSION II: Dental Pain and Anxiety Therapy: Relief is in Sight!
Effective management of pain and anxiety can elevate your practice from good to great. To get there, you need to rely on objective evidence, not websites and advocacy groups. We will compare and contrast analgesics and anxiolytics in terms of effectiveness and individual patient and procedure selection. Controversial issues such as oral sedation titration, habituation, and combination therapy will be discussed. Specific opioid and non-opioid recommendations will be listed along with patient selection criteria for NSAIDs. Extensive chair side handouts will be provided to enhance the "on shore" value of this very current and fast-paced lecture.
SESSION III: Drug-Induced Dental Dilemmas: From Bleeding to Xerostomia
Your patients are more medically complex than ever before. Multiple medications produce a plethora of intra-oral effects as well as treatment planning challenges. We will discuss strategies for identifying and managing drug-induced bleeding, intra-oral lesions, halitosis, and xerostomia. Handouts will include extensive reference tables to aid in identifying drug-induced taste disorders, pigmentation, gingival overgrowth, and ulcerations. Patient education materials and product guides for xerostomia and halitosis will also be provided. A detailed guide to the surgical management of warfarin patients will be given. You will leave this lecture better equipped to face the daunting task of evaluating and optimally treating medicated dental patients.

Aug 18, 2011 U of Iowa has some courses that I don't think anyone else has. Plus their courses are pretty affordable. I've taken some courses there in the past and would probably go back if I saw a course I needed to take.
