Minnesota Board of Dentistry rules that went into effect on March 19, 2007, included a revision to the nitrous oxide training requirement. The new rule requires “12 hours of didactic instruction and the personal administration of at least three individual cases of analgesia, and supervised clinical experience using fail-safe anesthesia equipment capable of positive pressure respiration.” This 12-hour continuing dental education training program is designed for: 1) dentists, dental hygienists and registered dental assistants who want to begin administering nitrous oxide/oxygen inhalation sedation according to Minnesota requirements, as well as for 2) dentists and dental team members who are using nitrous oxide sedation but want an update on new equipment, techniques and precautions.
