SYNOPSIS:
The focus of this course is sedation of the pediatric patient receiving dental care. It will prepare the participant to deliver safe and effective enteral (oral) conscious sedation to the patient under the age of 13 years. This course is designed to meet requirements for a pediatric enteral conscious sedation (OCS) permit in California and most other states. Major topics to be discussed during the three days of the course include: the development of guidelines for pediatric OCS, physiology and psychology of the child, sedation techniques in children, including N20-02, intranasal, intravenous and general anesthesia, oral conscious sedation including pharmacology and protocols, monitoring and record keeping, physical evaluation, medically compromised and special needs patients, and management of unintended consequences (sedation failures and oversedation). Issues of sedation in adult patients will also be discussed.
UPON COMPLETION YOU WILL BE ABLE TO:
Know the anatomic and physiologic differences between the child and adult
Describe the indications, contraindications, advantages and disadvantages of inhalation sedation with N20-02 in the pediatric patient
Discuss the appropriate use of N20-02 in combination with oral sedation
Know the indications, contraindications, advantages and disadvantages of oral conscious sedation in the pediatric patient
Name 5 orally-administered CNS-depressants recommended for use in pediatric OCS
Describe the pharmacologic actions of these 5 drugs on the CNS, respiratory system, and cardiovascular system
Outline the protocol for a pediatric OCS appointment
Determine the maximum recommended dosage of local anesthetic agents in pediatric dental patients
Describe the monitors employed during pediatric OCS
Describe the record keeping required for pediatric OCS
List the criteria for discharge from the dental office of the pediatric patient receiving OCS
Diagnose and manage oversedation and the unconscious
Describe the ASA Physical Status Classification System giving examples of each category
Diagnose and treat the medical emergency situations mandated by the State of California
Describe and understand the use of each of the emergency drugs and supplies mandated by the State of California
Use oral conscious sedation effectively and safely in the pediatric dental patient
