Dentistry is at a crossroads in the 21st century. Dentists are desperately trying to integrate new concepts of aesthetics into practice during a time when the basic concepts of occlusion are supported by some and attacked by others. Treatment positions from a Pankey-Dawson perspective seem in polar opposition to a myocentric philosophy. What concepts should a practicing dentist follow?

We believe that a different approach to understanding occlusion can be based upon the joint anatomy that we can image with 21st century MRI and CT scans. Furthermore, through this imaging some of the disparate philosophies can actually be unified. We see Joint Based Occlusion taking dentistry out of a more philosophical and empirical past into a more anatomical and scientific future.

Revolutionary in its insight that the TMJ is often the cause and not the effect of malocclusion, this course unlocks many of the mysteries of abnormal and unstable bite relationships. Joint Based Occlusion (JBO) is the study of occlusion from the known condition and position of the temporomandibular joint. JBO explains the bite pattern from a precise diagnosis of the joint, and it projects the future bite from what is documented from the joint condition.

Description:

This course deals with the joint as the source of malocclusion, but not to the exclusion of abnormal bites that may create TMJ. However, once injured, no other philosophy of occlusion has considered the profound alteration that the injured joint will cause in the bite relationship.

Emphasis is placed upon the finite analysis of spatial relationships in the joint with a normal disk. The normal joint horizontal and vertical dimensions will define the projection of the patient's Joint Based Occlusion. Alternatively, damaged joints will develop an alteration in these joint spatial relationships resulting in a Joint Based Malocclusion. These revolutionary concepts will cover malocclusion related to progressive disk displacement, progressive retrodiskal alteration, and progressive bony alteration. Both child and adult patients will be profiled. In addition the dynamic joint and occlusal adaptive responses will be discussed as they relate to the development of malocclusion, tooth wear or loss, and comprehensive dentistry failures.

Prerequisite:

This is an entry level course to the PERC curriculum and is a great starting point for students unfamiliar with Joint Based Occlusion concepts. There is no need to have prior education from institutions such as the Dawson Academy or Pankey Institute as the information provided in this course is specifically designed to be understood and useful to any practicing dentist. However, if you have participated in other continuing education institutes you will find that our courses compliment the information you have already received.
