Dental CE Course: Seminar in Charleston: Current Medical Issues in Dental Patients: A Potpourri of Updates and Guidel

Day 1, Friday, May 9, 2008
This portion of the course will provide an update of the most current guidelines for managing selected medically complex patients. Topics to be covered include the new American Heart Association guidelines for antibiotic prophylaxis, guidelines for the antibiotic prophylaxis of patients with prosthetic joints, risk assessment and management of patients with cardiovascular disease, guidelines for managing patients taking bisphosphonates, andguidelines for managing patients taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Day 2, Saturday, May 10, 2008
This portion of the course will provide an introduction to sleep disordered breathing, focusing on snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. Participants will learn about the basics of sleep and sleep disorders and the medical significance of obstructive sleep apnea. Treatment options for sleep apnea will be discussed with an emphasis on the use and fabrication of oral appliances. Each dentist will be provided with and trained on the use of the George gauge, which is an instrument used to determine the protrusive position for construction of an oral appliance.
