With implant dentistry becoming mainstream in daily dental practice, it is imperative for the general dentist to rationalize dental implants as a treatment option, successfully treatment plan implant cases and understand the science of implant surgery and prosthetics.
Several factors have combined to impact the increasing need and use of implants including an aging population and tooth loss related to age, the psychological aspects of tooth loss, poor results with conventional removable prostheses, predictable long term results of implant supported prostheses and maintenance of alveolar bone.
Judicious selection of which implant cases to treat will provide the clinician with the ability to expand the use of implants in their practice. Contemporary concepts and techniques will be examined in the context of incorporating predictable implant therapy into a general practice.
Upon completion of this course, participants will have the knowledge to:
evaluate patients for implant therapy
understand osseointegration and bone quality
select proper implant location
choose appropriate surgical instrumentation for oral implantology
understand surgical placement techniques and principles
