Dental CE Course: The Basics of Adult Oral Sedation

The Basics of Adult Minimal Sedation is specifically designed to conform to the AL State Board of Dental Examiners regulations concerning the use of oral conscious sedation and qualifies the participant to apply for the Oral Conscious Sedation Registration certificate. It will follow the current ADA Guidelines concerning minimal sedation.

This 16 hour course, taught by Drs. Mike Edwards and John Coke, will provide the basics for the safe use of conscious oral minimal sedation in the dental office.


Dr. John Coke is program director for both the AEGD and GPR post-graduate programs at UAB. He is board certified by the American Board of Oral Medicine.

Dr. Mike Edwards is a graduate of the UAB SOD. He has practiced sedation dentistry for over 30 years and has been involved in developing both state and national guidelines for the safe use of sedation.

This is intended for both dentists and their staff. Topics to be addressed include:

1. Board of Dental Examiners interpretations as related to oral sedation versus anxiety reduction (anxiolysis).
2. Oral sedative agents commonly used in dentistry; the basics of their pharmacology, physiology and past "track records."
3. How to tailor specific sedative medications to fit your patient's medical history and your appointment scheduling.
4. Presentation of a live sedation case from start to finish.
5. Participant review of ten case presentations
6. A review of the "red flags" in a limited physical examination.
7. Proper monitoring techniques for the sedated patient.
8. Proper documentation required by the dentist and dental staff; consent forms, monitoring strips, and patient info packets.
9. Overview of potential medical emergencies specific to oral sedation, their diagnosis, management and role of dental staff.
10. The basics of an emergency drug kit required for all conscious sedations.
11. Hands on participation in the basics of airway ventilation and management with actual case presentations.
12. Demonstration of live patient interviews and consent techniques.
13. Display and demonstration of the most advanced monitoring devices.
