This course will teach the general dentist how to manage the edentulous patient with dental implants and cost-effective overdenture solutions. Clinicians taking this course will learn fundamental surgical procedures, treatment planning protocols and restorative steps necessary to easily select and treat patients with mandibular overdentures. Emphasis is on effective utilization of technology and standardized protocols to maximize profitability and success of patient treatment.
Course Objectives
After completing this course, the dental professional should be able to:
- Select patients appropriate for implant therapy
- Effectively plan and present treatment options to patients
- Place implants using a traditional flap and surgical approach
- Place dental implants using 3D imaging and surgical guides with a flapless approach
- Describe and manage restorative techniques for the implant overdenture
- Manage complications and risks associated with implant therapy
- Recognize and describe the surgical anatomy of the edentulous patient
- Communicate the benefits of dental implants to patients
- Understand marketing and financial strategies for putting implant dentistry into a successful practice
Surgical Training and live patient exercise in Birmingham, Alabama. Each clinician does one surgery, and assists in one surgery.

Thursday, 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm
4:00 pm: Review of cases for surgical session; dinner served
Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm
8:30 am: Surgical Session 1. Up to four delegate surgeries
11:30 am: Surgical review
12:30 pm: Lunch
1:30 pm: Surgical Session 2. Up to four delegate surgeries
4:30 pm: Surgical review
Additional Information
Session 1 participation required (http://www.dcedental.com/treatment-with-small-diamater-implants-part-i.html). Participant must have a license to practice in Ala., or can obtain a temporary 10-day state license. Must provide proof of malpractice insurance.
Dinner is provided Day 1. Light Breakfast, lunch, and snack provided on Day 2. Space is limited.

About Dr. McCracken
After completing dental school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a prosthodontic residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Dr. Michael McCracken received a Ph.D in biomedical engineering for research related to growth factors and healing of implants in compromised hosts. Dr. McCracken is a professor in the department of general dental sciences at UAB School of Dentistry, where he has also served as associate dean for education, director of graduate prosthodontics, and director of the implant training program. He maintains an active research program within the university and a private practice focused on implant dentistry. He also lectures internationally.
