The advent of direct composite bonding, tooth bleaching and enhanced all ceramics has greatly affected the approaches used in the diagnosis, planning and case design for treating today's compromised smiles. Despite inherent challenges with identifying the clinical protocol that preserve natural dentition and achieve patient objectives, our goal as clinicians can now realistically be to provide minimal treatment first, so only compromised dentition are affected. Such conservative treatment requires us to work in close collaboration with ceramists, demonstrate greater attention to shape, form and color matching, and practice the listening and communication skills necessary to translate patient expectations into the desired results. To achieve esthetic success and functional longevity while simultaneously realizing an elevated level of professional satisfaction and skill, we must also maintain a working knowledge and plan for occlusal stability, conservative tooth reduction, exact provisionals, state-of-the-art direct and ceramic materials, and perfect biologic acceptance.
During this lecture, Dr. Thomas Trinkner will provide suggestions for the use of mock-ups, tools for communicating with ceramists, and other components necessary to develop more conservative approaches that will help ensure your success in solving esthetic dilemmas in the least invasive but most creatively challenging manner possible. Specific case studies will also be discussed.
